Moonwalker is a 1988 musical film starring Michael Jackson and rather than featuring one continuous narrative, the film expresses the influence of fandom and innocence through a collection of short films about Jackson. These are clay Strata-cut slices used during animation in Segment 2: “Retrospective” when the Jackson 5 sing the song “ABC”. The Strata-cut slices have been mounted inside a frame to protect the clay pieces along with the back of the display being signed by creator/animator: David Daniels.
Strata-cut animation is most commonly a form of clay animation in which a long bread-like “loaf” of clay, internally packed tight and loaded with varying imagery is sliced into thin sheets with the animation camera taking a frame after each cut eventually revealing the movement of the internal images within.Â
